The Sixth Archive of the following Syrian Geological Studies site:

The geological maps were established
during three periods of time by the following:
1-The French
pioneer Lewis Dubertret who worked on the geology of Syria and Lebanon for 29
years starting from 1927 to 1956.
2-The
Soviet expedition directed by V. P. Ponikarov during the period 1958-1961.
3-The Syrian geologists of the General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources.
-
The first
geological map scale 1/1000000 covering Syria and Lebanon based on the
geological map of Lebanon scale 1/200000, which were established in 1926 by J.
Zomofen, and due to the Syrian geologic studies by L. Dubertret, A. Keller and
H. Vautrin.
-
In 1955
Dubertret published the geological map of Lebanon scale 1/200000 and a geological
map of Antakia sheet scale 1/200000 and developed the Lattakia – Hama geological
sheet.
-
The Soviet
expedition published a new topographic map scale 1/200000, a new geological map
scale 1/200000, a new geological map scale 1/1000000 and many geological map’s sheets scale 1/50000.
-
The Syrian
geologists of the General Establishment of Geology and Mineral Resources
concentrated on the geological map sheets scale 1/50000.

It is important to mention
that Arabic or English map name may differ from map type to another (geology,
magnetic, gravity, etc.). So we had to stick to the name written on the map
itself.

Scale 1/50000:
Syria is divided into 299 sheets; these maps are arranged into 20 rows starting from left to right and variable columns ranging from two to twenty two. Each map is defined by the row number and Latin latter ranging from A to V (See Figure). For example, SHEMAL DIMASHQ map is denoted by (15B). This method is used here and because not all the maps are compiled the map number and the map’s Arabic Name will be given in the following Table only to the published maps.

- Gravity maps of Syria scale 1:500000 and 1:200000 were achieved in 1974 by Bureau d’etudes Industrielles
et de Cooperation de l’institut Francais de Petrole
(B.E.I.C.I.P).
- Used density of rocks was 2.53 g/cm3 and map contour interval
is 2 mGals.
- 4 maps of scale 1:500000 starting from south to north and from west
to east and numbered from 1 to 4.
- 24 maps of scale 1:200000 were drawn starting from south to north and from west to east and numbered from 1
to 24.
